As the Pit crew logistics manager for Ricky Sneddon of both Team Seadoo and Team Yamaha at various stages in his career as world champion, it was evident to me that both make a product that simply knocks the likes of Kawasaki, Polaris and Honda right out of the water.
Now I still hold Seadoo close to my heart as I found that the most fun was had in the surf on a Seadoo than i care to remember on the Yamaha, but thats just my opinion.
The bottom line is, when you're travelling at close to 85 mph across the water on a crotch rocket, does it really matter what your riding, unless you,re on a Seadoo with the new Intelligent Brake System fitted. Who would have ever thought we would end up with brakes on our jet skis. Well I'm going to let you decide which watercraft suits your personality and pocket. Thats a good question.Jet skis tend to operate on similar capacites as motorbikes and as such can hold 12 -20 liters of fuel dependent on the make and model. Two stroke motors will require a special octane or unleaded to produce the best performance which can be determined by a Race Shop or Jet ski mechanic for your intended use. 4 strokes tend to run on richer octane for better performance. Thanks for the feedback Jen.Will have a look see.The Yamaha Gp series always handled well in the surf for me due its abilitity to carry 3 people with a good 1200 cc of power.For performance, I have to say i enjoy the updated Seadoo of teh Xp series due to the non rigid ride by the suspension seating arrangement.
Does the Sea Doo Wake 215 ballast system really create a good wake vs. a ski without a ballast system?
Hi Brad, thats a great question.Seadoo has designed varuos shaped hulls over the years(as have yamaha and others) so when looking at function, the hull selected for the Wake 215 streamlines water and and the combined directional blast form the propulsion system create a near perfect outflow of wake to be distributed in the correct position at towing speeds for maximum enjoyment by the skier. So to answer your question, the position of the ski in the water is controlled by the ballast system to create the right wake from the various factors all being in sync with each other.Hope this helps

This article gives some good basics, but a side-by-side comparison of comparable models of Yamahas and Seadoos would be great, including comments on handling and performance. Even better would be fuel economy and average annual maintenance costs. All of these would be factors in any buying decision for me.

Thanks for the feedback. You have valid comments when looking at comparables for the manufacturers. I will hopefullt place an article link to more information soonest. The article is quite long at the moment to get all the available jet ski models in and dont know how long it will take to load the page if I add to much detail. The showroom should have brochures on exact specifications near your area once you have narrowed it down to horsepower and intended use and be able to give you recommendations of the best jet ski for your needs.
Which has the best cooling system? Have heard that Yamaha uses the water in which you are playing, to cool.

Thats a good question.
All manufacturers use the same technology to use the water in which the jetski is operated. A jetski motor uses what is called an impeller to churn the water as propulsion as opposed to the convential ski boat propeller. The impeller behaves as a turbine much like that used in dams and spins the water out for force and power.
So in essence it won't really matter which manufacturer you chose if this is your criteria.

I have owned Seadoos in the past. I just today picked up my 2008 Yamaha FX Cruiser SHO from the dealership. It was in getting the 100 hour service for $360. Anyway, everyone who works at this huge dealership who sells mostly SeaDoos tells me candidly that all of the techs prefer working on the Yamaha, and there are way to many things that break and go bad on the Seadoo. My supercharged ski takes regular 87 octane fuel. If you want reliabilty and save a lot of money and go just as fast the answer is simple, go with the Yamaha. Better seat, just as fast, all the bells and whistles including pop up cleats, easily adjustable handlebars (on seadoo u need an allen wrench to adjust lol)cruise control, no wake mode, cup holders, etc. They told me that shock absorber which caught my interest on the Seadoo was crap. I also asked about the braking system and they said it is not so great. The only thing they say the Seadoo has over the Yami is the closed loop system, especially if you ride in salt water like I do. BUT, if you just flush with "Salt Away" when you get home, VOILA no more advantage Seadoo. Such an easy choice. They offered me a RXT-X for less then my Yamaha SHO back in 2008, I still went with the Yami and I'm glad I did. So is my wife who rides on the back sometimes. Smooth and comfortable.

Thats a good question. In my opinion, your best bet would be a Yamaha GP 1200 or GP 800 or from Seadoo a SPX or GSX. These 4 Jet Ski models will be a few years old but will have been serviced at regular intervals and should have roughly 50 - 100 hours of use on them. They should fit comfortably into your budget and be reliable enough for a few years before considering a trade in. They will have between 135 - 150 hp motors and can personally say that all 4 will be powerful enough to tow a tube ring or a wakeboard at 15 -25 mph. The GP 1200 will be the most versatile of the four in terms of use for 2 passengers.

Pulling a wakeboard with a passenger on a seadoo wake 155 should pitch you in the 20-25 mph range which is adequate for wakejumping/boarding.

In the Yamaha Range, you will find that most of the jet skis are 4 stroke powered and some seadoos are two strokes giving higher rev ranges. So if you relate this to the motocross fraternity, it becomes a question of powerful 4 strokes versus quick out of the box revving 2 strokes.
In order to adjust for the rev range of the seadoo, I would say that the supercharger on the VX Deluxe would be your best bet. You will be best advised to go for weight reduction if you are piloting the watercraft alone (no passengers). Go for upgrades on the engine management system - high performance chip modifications to tune the motor above the factory specifications.Then start switching steering etc to aluminum and graphite aftermarket components. You will be amazed at how many components you can get from Yamaha Racing.

I honestly have no idea what the current legislation is for fines as they vary from state to state.
As far as towing goes, form experience we have fouund that 85 hp engines have sufficient power to tow a wakeboard and one person at a decent pace. For two up I would say 130 horepower with no passengers on the jetski.
Thus if you were to have a passenger and two persons skiing, I would say a 3 seater jetski with minimum 150 horspower for the pilot, a passenger and two skiiers. Hope this helps.

Hey for the question about the towing, I have heard that you are only allowed to have the amount of people being towed as can fit on the jet ski. Like if you have a three seater u can have one person being towed, one person watching back, and the driver. Where as with the yamaha jet boats you can tow heaps more people.
Now for my question! We are looking for a 10-15000 dollar jetski. Three seater, fun for the family but still got good horse power to get fast??? Also I just heard that with the seadoo u have to put them in for a service every 100 km that costs $1000???? So all in all what would be a cheaper to maintain jet ski???? Thxxx

Let me see if I can answer all your questions. Firstly, you are correct in stating that the law requires a spotter and driver to tow a skier from a jet ski.
I also agree that a jet boat will have more power as they will possibly have two jetski motors sitting alongside each other.
As far as choices go, using your need for speed and also be able to use as a wake creating ski, then I would suggest to look into the cruiser series from Yamaha or look into the Yamaha Waverunner FX Cruiser SHO which has a supercharger.
As far as servicing goes, you are advised to have any make of jetski serviced at least every thirty hours, irrespective of how far you have travelled. There are onboard clocks on all jetskis with digital storage memory. So cost is the same for all, but check with a jet ski maintenance shop for pricing in your area.

I have both a Doo and Yami....
If you want a entry lvl model, I would have to say go with the Sea Doo's. I have a 07 GTI SE 155, its fuel consumption is great (100+ mile range on full tank), the N/A Rotax is a stout motor, plus it has power to GPS clock in at 58.6mph, and the hull is a MUCH better design vs the entry lvl of Yammi. Its more stable, and is one of the sea doo's better hull designs.
Now if you want POWER...Go for a FZR or FZS. They are faster then the 255-260 RXT/RXP, easily adjustable handlebars, cheaper, RUN on 87 vs 91+, and not so many issues reported as with the S/C'd Doo's. I have a 2010 FZS, I was look at the RXT-X but price, only needing 87, and overall performance numbers had me going for the yammi. The FZS w/ 14hours on the clock has gps clocked in at 68.3mph....That is moving, but the pure fun of this beast is the insane acceleration

i am trying to compare the Sea Doo and yamamha waverunner. The main concern is which is best for pulling a Wakeboarder and I have heard that the Sea Doo is a bit tipsy when going slow. Can you advise?

I am looking at a jetski for offshore fishing including beach launching in South-Africa, any advice on which ski to consider?
Hi Chris,
Due to the beach breaks we experience during launching in South Africa, i would suggest a jet ski that has more of a bull nose for stability.
In the last 12 months, I would have to say that RaceTech Yamaha is producing the most effective and useful attachments for Jet skis. You can ask for Patrick who should be able to ship products to you via timefreight or such if you are not near Pinetown.
In order to take the best advantage of fishing ski products, I would go for a few year old GPX 800 or 1200 Yamaha or a new model 4 stroke.

I have a 1995 seadoo spi and haven't had any problems with it for the past 16 years, seadoos are definatly built to last. I also have a 2008 seadoo rxp-x. I love the feeling of not having to worry about anyone beating me in a race because I have the riva stage II racing kit. Tops out at 85.6 mph from my garmin gps. I would never buy anything but seadoo....
I bought a Seadoo GTX limited in November and am hoping to take it to the lake this weekend. Must say we have rented several brands and strongly feel Seadoo has been the best. It has provided the best ride and comfort. Looking forward to hitting the lake for the first time with it.
How much gas should I expect to burn with the wake pro 215?
Is it easy for someone to wake board with it? Being so low to the water its not hard to get out of the water and stay up?

My Sea Doo 2009 rxt is rocks! Blows by everything and you can hear it coming a mile away. Smooth as silk power, ride, and with warp speed any time you want it.
Sorry to tell you, Honda is by far the best jet ski on the market. After riding all of the top companies (Yamaha, Polaris, Kawasaki and Sea-Doo) it is immediately clear that the Honda is extremely comfortable and 10-15% faster at full throttle than the others. It's silent and keeps the rider dry. The only downside is that it does not handle as well as the Yamaha, but it doesn't loose by much.
I'm in S. Florida and looking for a used sea doo or Yami. I like the idea of a 4 stroke 185HP supercharged machine (speed junkie who once owned a Ninja sport bike). Any years to avoid or factory issues to watch out for? I want to find one under 75 hours less than $3500. I'll do the compression test and test drive before I buy
I am looking for advice on buying my first jet ski. I will be using it for family fun and fishing in Rockport, Texas. Salt water bays are the norm. I have heard Yamaha's closed system is best. Also two or three seats? Would really appreciate advice. Beard I don't need turbo charged.
