The first body style used by the folks at General Motors to build the infamous 64 - 71 Chevelle SS Malibu sat on an A-type frame chassis and proved to be a very popular setup for a muscle car enthusiast in the 1960's. The Chevelle quickly gathered a following as a mid size Chevy that could push the boundaries when mated to different engine packages.

Finding matching number Chevelles now days can prove extremely difficult as for some year models, the American built Chevelle produced limited numbers with some Z16 built - SS 396 options - numbering in the low hundreds with under 100 of these muscle cars known to still be in existence.

So, the 1964 and 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS had a few option package from the dealership when ordered. With the two door coupes receiving the hype they deserved with the younger generation, the Chevy engineers were pushed to provide the 327 cubic inch V8 option which proved very popular in the 1964 Chevy Malibu.

By 1965 and the increase in demand for sporty two door coupes with muscle under the bonnet, Chevy had stepped up its game and now offered the increased horsepower that had been rated to 350 HP using the 327 ci engine block. The most sought after engine package being the SS 396 was named the Z16 with an extended motor compartment by a few inches to make way for additional components and a highly torqued motor. Apart from the engine differences, the SS 396 had some body and suspension modifications such as the c -pillars and the front and rear axle upgrades to handle the extra horsepower.

The 1964 and 1965 Chevelle Malibu SS were identified by the SS emblems located on the front or rear quarter panels and had an optional trim package for the rear quarter in an upside down L-shape. 1966 and 1967 Chevrolet Chevelle

In 1966 there were some serious body modifications to the Chevelle as the muscle car world moved their production from the square styling cues of the late 50's into the more rounded and aero dynamic styling cues of the late 60's.

The 1966 Chevelle still carried the SS 396 option, but going into 1967 produced very few of these engine packages. The body modification meant producing a newer look that would be an upgrade on the previous 1964 - 1966 models without losing the horsepower, but adding something unique to the models.

The result of this strategy was to introduce subtle styling changes into the comfort levels and appearance of the interior design. Options now included center consoles and upgraded dashboard assembly packages. Speedometers and tachometers were changed with some nifty little extras being added in the drivers seat. Bucket seats became popular with the younger crowd looking for that something sporty to identify their ride apart form the previous models.

The 1967 Chevelle can easily be remembered by the driving prowess of Vin Diesels character in the Fast and the Furious Franchises. The Silver 67 Chevelle graced the screens wearing a set of wide black racing stripes which were synonymous with the Chevelle of the 1960's.

1968 Chevelle SS 396

In 1968 the Chevy Chevelle underwent some more changes as the muscle car amrket began to stand on its own as an automobile preference. The body modifications were not so subtle adn the SS - Super Sport tag was now moved to the grille. The introduction of black inserts now appeared in the front and rear bumpers and the tracking of the vehicle was shortened by a few inches as the suspension and torsion arms were upgraded to more performance parts.Redline wheels were now seen on most Chevelle models even though they were an option. The interior maintained its look with more material variations than anything else.

The engine packages offered were mostly built on the assembly of a small block 327 ci or the more more robust and beefier 396 Big Block V8.As power became a prerequisite for muscle cars, the larger 427 was crammed into a few models and they managed to stake a claim on the lighter chassis due to the suspension upgrades.

The 1969, 1970 and 1971 Chevy Chevelle SS

The 1969 Chevelle became the most popular car in America and the 1969 model produced some very high numbers on the production charts. The reason being that Chevrolet was starting to produce some really fantastic motors that were highly competitive on the track. The Big Block V8 was proving more popular with performance specialists than the Ford V8 Flathead and sales shot up on modified engine packages.

The mojority of Chevelles produced between 1969 and 1970 had been sold without a six cylinder motor and it seemed to Chevrolet that they had created a winning motor all round. Their research started to go into intake injection systems and R.A.M intakes to force more air into the turbos that were now and option on some models. These Chevelles were easily capable of sub 13 second times for the quarter mile and were a chosen platform for drag strip enthusiasts. With the performance engine packages came upgrades to the brake lining components and changes to the grilles once again to be able to identify the 1969 and 1970 models with the engine compartment closed.

In 1971 the Chevelle received another face lift and was introduced for the first time as a two headlight automobile. With more safety adjustments and with the onslaught of federal legal ramifications, it became necessary to rethink all the safety aspects of the vehicle. This lead to new safety harnessing for passenger and driver as well as high visibility turn signals. Rotors were again upgraded and technology adapted to increased engine capacity in the early 1970's very well in the automotive industry.

The Chevy Chevelle still offers an unreal drive for a muscle car with numerous options available for the enthusiast to work with. These options often include coil over hsock sytems, chassis engineering, turbo injection options and a multitude of brightwork to make your Chevelle unique in its own way whilst still maintaining the look the made the Chevy Chevelle a much loved and respected muscle car to enthusiasts.
